Maths Term Three Week One We learned about place value of numbers from 0-1000. Students practised creating two and three digit numbers by rolling dice. Then we tried ordering numbers from smallest to largest. We learned that looking at the hundreds, tens and ones/units columns helps us to order numbers.
We also learned about volume. We learned that volume is the amount of space something takes up. Students practised creating different shaped buildings with the same volume. We also made models with MAB Unit Blocks and then counted how much volume they each had. Now we know how to order shapes from smallest to largest volume.
Week Two We continued to learn about place value of numbers from 0-1000. This week we focused on skip counting. Students discovered that you can skip count from any number. This means that it is possible to count by 2s from 0 (0,2,4,6,8,10) and also from another number such as 3 (3,5,7,9,11). We practised counting by 2s, 3s, 5s and 10s but we know we can skip count by any other number too!
We also learned about shape. We learned that if we turn a shape, it is still the same shape but is just in a different position. We practised turning a shape to make various patterns. We also learned that if we flip a shape, it is still the same shape but it becomes a mirror image.
Week Three We learned about basic multiplication. Students practised making groups of objects. We learned that there are different ways to show the same idea (2x4=8 is the same as 2 groups of 4 equals 8). We also learned we can write 4+4 to show 2 groups of 4.
We also learned about capacity. We know that capacity means how much a container can hold. Capacity can be measured with water, rice or blocks. We learned that measuring with water is best. Students practised filling different sized containers with beads to find out which had the least capacity and which had the most.
Week Four We continued to learn about basic multiplication. This week students realised that skip counting is an excellent way to find the answer to a multiplication sum. We sat at our tables and worked out how many legs at each table. For example, if there was a table of 6 people with 2 legs each we could write, 6 groups of 2, or, 6x2. To find the answer, we skip counted by 2s and stopped after the 6th number (2,4,6,8,10,12) to find the answer. 12!
We also continued to learn about capacity. We learned different terms for explaining the capacity of a container. These were full, three quarters full, half full, one quarter full and empty. Connecting our knowledge about fractions with capacity was helpful! We also realised that just because a container is taller than another, does not mean that it has more capacity.
